As the founding members and artists of Flamenco Borealis, we, Lina Kazan (dancer/choreographer) and Daniel Regnier (composer/guitarist/multi-instrumentalist), are passionate about creating Flamenco art because we identify with its emotional content and its overall aesthetic approach. Flamenco has its own peculiar way of approaching the explosive and rebellious, the jazzy and playful, the severe and classical, the tragic and fateful. This peculiar "Flamenco" way of dealing with universal human experiences nourishes our artistic instincts and provides paths for exploration. Flamenco Borealis belongs to a new generation of Flamenco artists who build upon and go beyond traditional Flamenco by innovation and fusion with other genres.
We pursue Flamenco art because it is a unique art form with a great range of expressive possibilities. First, the work of choreography, musical composition and performance are intertwined in a fascinating and dynamic tissue. Second, there is a clear tradition of Flamenco, but the art form demands that artists create their own work, such that it is a living dialogue between past and present.
Our artistic practice has evolved through continuous work on live performance projects in Canada, and extended to include work in film. Flamenco presents exceptional possibilities for original screen dance creation. Whether theatrical or on screen, our work is immersed in story telling and thematic. Flamenco Borealis created a critically acclaimed film TAKE MY HAND (2021), winning nine selections and garnering four awards in international film festivals. Keen to explore further possibilities of flamenco on screen, Flamenco Borealis is currently completing an hour-long series of dance films exploring the theme of the four seasons, to be released in 2024.
